FORT BRAGG – Six members of the USCG Auxiliary, Flotilla 88 of Lake County, traveled to Fort Bragg to cook and serve a St. Patrick’s Day lunch for the US Coast Guard service personnel stationed at Noyo Harbor on March 18. Joining in the efforts to prepare this special lunch were several members of Flotilla 87 of Mendocino County.
A total of 54 Coast Guard personnel and auxiliarist enjoyed the traditional meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, salads, French bread and desserts.
This was the 10th year that Flotilla 88 has been preparing the St. Patrick’s Day feed and it has become a tradition which the Coast Guard personnel look forward to each year as well as the Flotilla.

KELSEYVILLE – “Winged Migration” will be presented at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2, in the Clear Lake State Park visitor center auditorium. It is a must see for all ages.
There are no better words to describe this 89-minute film than in the editorial words of Jeff Shannon: “For earthbound humans, 'Winged Migration' is as close as any of us will get to sharing the sky with our fine feathered friends. It's as if French director Jacques Perrin and his international crew of dedicated filmmakers had been given a full-access pass by Mother Nature herself, with the complete 'cooperation' of countless species of migrating birds, all answering to eons of migratory instinct. The film is utterly simple in purpose, with minimal narration and on-screen titles to identify the wondrous varieties of flying wildlife, but its visceral effect is humbling, awesome and magnificently profound. A brief but important hunting scene may upset sensitive viewers and children, but doesn't stop 'Winged Migration' from being essential all-ages viewing.”
Plan time to tour the natural history museum, from woodlands to wetlands. Be sure to check out the Visitor Center gift shop where you will always find nature related items from T-shirts to frogs that talk.
There is no entrance fee to the park to attend programs, visit the museum or participate in nature walks. The Visitor Center will open 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer. Guided walks will take place on the second and fourth Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.

BOGGS MOUNTAIN – The Bay Area Orienteering Club will host a three-day A-meet open to all orienteers May 1 through 3.
The event will feature the 2009 U.S. Team Trials, where our Team that will compete at the World Championships in Hungary in the summer will be selected.
There will be a sprint on Friday, May 1, at Spring Lake Regional Park (http://www.sonoma-county.org/PARKS/pk_slake.htm) in Santa Rosa; a medium-distance course on Saturday, May 2, and a long-distance course on Sunday, May 3, both of which will be at Boggs Mountain State Demonstration Forest (http://www.boggsmountain.org/SF_Explore.htm) in Cobb.
The latter two events are designated as World Ranking Events, which means the M–21+ and F–21+ classes will earn world ranking points.
There will also be a standard A-meet for all classes held concurrently with the Team Trials. And there will be recreational courses available on all three days.

The bass have moved up into shallow water, or at least into staging areas near shallow water. Some fish are on beds. Others … Not yet. Everything from swim baits and brush hogs to finesse worms on drop shots have been good this week. Live minnows are still a hot ticket. We’ve got plenty of plump juicy minnows on hand for the weekend.
The biggest news on the lake this week has been the crappie bite. We saw a pretty sharp jump in the numbers of slabs caught along the west side docks (point Lakeview, Jago Bay) as well as the Clearlake and Clearlake Oaks shorelines.
The peak, as mentioned above, seemed to hit during the near 100-degree temps we experienced earlier in the week. However, we know where they are now and they seem to like live minnows. We’ve boosted the amount of bait on hand in hopes of seeing this bite continue. It’s crappie time!
Catfish anglers are gearing up for the Catfish Derby coming in May. Already, folks are fishing Cache Creek, Indian Island, and Rattlesnake Island to scout out where the big fish are. All the usual players are here – mackerel, anchovies, livers, shrimp, crawlers, minnows ... and more.
