It’s been hot ‘round these parts. Low 100s and upper 90s have been on tap to get us feeling like summer is really upon us.
With the steady hot temperatures has come the onset of some seriously good fishing. Bass are on. Cats, on. Crappie, well we’re getting some of those too.
The algae bloom and decay problem that has plagued the south end of the lake now for weeks seems to be easing up a bit. In addition, efforts have been made by the city and county folks to clear the public ramps to make launch and recovery an easier process. It’s going to be a great weekend to fish Clear Lake!
The bass bite has surged to life in the past week. Anglers are finding fish by dipping Senkos, Brush Hogs, tubes, Ikas, creature baits and finesse worms.
Live bait anglers have been enjoying a solid bite on minnows and live crawdads (yes, we have live crawdads – while supplies last). Target areas that are deeper and offer the fish some kind of structure. Rocks, docks, weeds and walls are the four keys that we look for this time of year (my wife complains that I chant “rocks, docks, weeds and walls” in my sleep).
Looking for a top water bite? Try the last hour of darkness and first hour of light in the morning with frogs like River2Sea’s Bully Wa. Same thing goes for when the sun is going down in the late evening hours.
Crappie. Now here’s an interesting tale. I’m reading (in an unnamed local print media) that there’s no crappie to be caught. Yet, I’m getting reports nearly every day of a decent bite here in the south end.
Here’s the thing … We’re seeing the fish and photos here in the store so there must be something to the reports that we’re getting. Come and fish for crappie – you won’t be disappointed. Deep water, a slow presentation, and live bait will get you a nice stringer.
Oh, and one other essential element – you’ll need a boat. You may not limit out at 25, but you’ll best what you can feed a family in one meal with average catches around a dozen or so.
Catfish action has been hot, hot, hot. Big cats, little cats, plenty of cats. Crawdads, minnows, mackerel, anchovies and the list of viable baits goes on. No real trick here, just get out and soak some bait in your favorite catfishin’ hole.

LAKE COUNTY NEWS – The Lake County Channel Cats were sizzling at the latest invitational swim meet held in Ukiah on Saturday, June 26.
This was the third in a series of four progressive meets hosted by the Rohnert Park Piranha Swim Club.
The competition also included members from the Willits Otters and the Ukiah Dolphins swim teams.
The Channel Cats, coached by Agustin Merodio, proved a formidable force of five, scooping up 13 first place wins, three individual A-time medals and improved times for all participants.
Ranging in ages from 5 to 15, the Channel Cat swimmers are a tight, supportive team that cheerfully encourage each other’s best effort and demonstrate the fun of competition.
Sarah Merodio, 12, took the lead with four first place wins in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke events. She swam a personal best in the 100 yard breaststroke, achieved A-time standards in the girls 11-12 year old division and earned a distinctive A-medal for this accomplishment.
Floranne Ellington, 12, raced to first place in the 100 yard backstroke and took home three second place ribbons for 50 yard freestyle, backstroke and 100 yard freestyle. In addition, she marked a new B-time in the 50 yad backstroke and collected a fourth place ribbon in the 50 yard breaststroke.
Lauren Rudnick, 9, set a speedy pace securing four 1st place wins in both the 25 yard and 50 yard freestyle and breaststroke events, plus finished second with a new B time in the 50 yard backstroke among 9- to 10-year-old girls.
Charlie Adams, 8, added two more medals to his collection by exceeding A-time standards in the boys 8 and under division for both 25 yard freestyle and 50 yard backstroke. He surged ahead of the competition, achieving four first place wins in freestyle and backstroke events and finished second place with a new B time in the 25 yard breaststroke.
Youngest competitor, Robin Adams, 5, showed eager determination on her leap from the diving block, besting her previous freestyle efforts by 16 seconds. She finished as high as seventh and eighth among the 8 and under girls in the 25 and 50 yard freestyle and the 25 yard backstroke events.
The Channel Cats practice four evenings a week at the Westshore Pool in Lakeport.

The meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Lakeport Yacht Club, located at the Fifth Street ramp in Lakeport.
Visiting Flotilla 88 will be US Coast Guard Commander David K. Chareonsuphiphat, director of the USCG Auxiliary.
Following the meeting, a barbecue will be held honoring the commander’s visit.
Anyone interested in joining this active group is encouraged to attend, meet Commander Chareonsuphiphat from the “gold side,” get acquainted with the Flotilla members (the “silver side”) and join the Flotilla for the barbecue.
