LAKEPORT – Founders Cup Night is this Saturday, April 24, at the Lakeport Speedway.

It will be an action-packed night with the racing kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 401 Martin St., Lakeport.

With Mother Nature winning the first night's events after qualifying was complete, the speedway will hold its opening night at the speedway again this weekend. Mother Nature let them race long enough to see the Coors Light Modified track record be shattered by Mark Marek of Lakeport at a 12.386.

There is an action-packed card this Saturday night at the New Super Speedway featuring the Coors Light Modifieds, the ever-exciting Clover Hydro Jammers, the Snake Pit Development Bombers, the Nor-Cal Pro 4 Modifieds and the NCRA Mini Stocks.

There will be a kids tire race where four teams of four kids will race tires for prizes and Jim Kelly will be inducted into the NCRA Hall of Fame.

All the hot drivers in the Coors Light Modifieds will be on hand to see if they can break Marek’s new track record that was set at the last race. They know the time is short before the sun's rays beat down on the track and make it impossible to beat the time.

Coming off a rainout the crews have the cars all polished up and they are all revved up to go racing.

Come out and see all the new changes at Lakeport Speedway and cheer for your favorite driver and all the new drivers as well.

Bring your kids to the race track and sign them up to participate in the first tire race of the season at Lakeport Speedway.

Also out this weekend will be the new Lakeport Speedway Speedy Signature Shuttle, where kids can get autographs from the drivers through out the night.

The management is looking forward to making this your community based not-for-profit speedway.

MENDOCINO COUNTY – The Big River Stewards program of the Mendocino Land Trust and the Mendocino Coast Chapter of the Audubon Society are offering a free two-day bird survey training workshop on May 1 and 2.

The workshop will be led by expert birder, wildlife photographer and endangered species consultant Ron LeValley.

LeValley, founder of the avian consulting firm, Mad River Biologists, will train participants in identifying birds by visual and audio cues, as well as bird surveying methodology.

The classroom portion of the workshop will be held at the Stanford Inn on Saturday, May 1, from Noon to 4 p.m. PowerPoint presentations and audio recordings will help attendees hone their bird identification skills.

On Sunday, May 2, participants will meet at 7 a.m. at Big River Beach to further practice field identification skills on a guided hike up the haul road with the training leader and other experienced birders from the Mendocino Coast Chapter of the Audubon Society. The training will conclude around 11 a.m.

After completing the training, participants will have the opportunity to put their new skills to work by signing up for the annual Big River Bird Survey, an ambitious project, begun in 2003, that is cosponsored by California State Parks, the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society and the Mendocino Land Trust.

The survey seeks to document bird species present at Big River parklands and track changes in their populations over time.

Volunteer bird surveyors have counted over 10,200 individual birds of 87 species at the original 28 point count stations during the spring surveys at Big River and additional stations and routes have been surveyed in collaboration with neighboring landowner, the Conservation Fund.

For more information about the surveys, a report entitled "Report on 2005 Big River Breeding Season and Fall Bird Surveys Conducted by the Big River Stewards" is available on the Mendocino Land Trust's website, www.mendocinolandtrust.org.

Data from the past six years of spring surveys will be available at the training.

To attend the workshop, please RSVP to Big River Stewards Volunteer Coordinator Matt Coleman at 707-962-0470 or, by e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
