The Rider Report: Conditions for holiday fishing

Well, we’re just before the first of two “holiday” weekends with the Fourth of July parked on a Wednesday right between the two. Fishing is pretty good and the weather has been hot but not unreasonably so. Clear Lake is running in the upper 70s for water temperature. The reports haven’t changed a whole lot from a week ago so here’s the quick run-down …

For the bassin’ folks, the best bite has been in the morning hours – from first light to approximately 11 a.m. There’s a decent top water bite, the drop shotters are having fun, and fishing a jig in 15-20 feet of water will yield you some nice fish. The afternoons have seen the winds come up and make fishing a bit more difficult. Get your casting in early and enjoy a good bite!

Crappie anglers are reporting limits of fish (25) at Konocti Harbor Resort. Minnows have been effective and mini-jigs in chartreuse or black and silver have been good. Other crappie fishermen have had some success catching quality fish near the old Boat Works and Four Poles locations here in the south end.

The largest catfish this week came from the Indian Beach Resort. One of their guests caught a whopper in the mid-20 pound class while night fishing. Others have reported more moderately sized fish coming on nightcrawlers. Cache Creek still seems to be producing the biggest numbers of fish. Still others are doing well fishing the area around the old Austin Resort property.

The Lake Friends of the NRA want to invite you join us for a benefit dinner to be held Saturday, July 7, here in Clearlake. The event will feature a catered prime rib dinner, live and silent auctions, special drawings and lots of fun. This is the first time this event has been held here in Lake County and proceeds of the event will go to the NRA Foundation to support local, state and national shooting sports.

Who should attend and event like this? NRA members, hunters, target shooters, rod and gun club members, cops, CCW holders, gun owners or gun enthusiasts. You don’t have to be an NRA member to attend. Tickets for the dinner are $50 each. Sponsorship packages are available. Stop by our shop to see some of the more than 20 beautiful firearms that will be featured at the event. You’ll see rifles, shotguns or handguns from Benelli, Kimber, Remington, Smith & Wesson, Savage, Marlin and more.
