SAN JOSE, Calif. – California Water Service Group announced it has officially opened its annual College Scholarship Program.

Eligible students residing in areas served by the utility’s California, Hawaii, and Washington subsidiaries may now apply online for one of the scholarships under the $60,000 program, which provides two $10,000 grand-prize awards and additional, smaller awards for college and higher-education expenses.

“Through the California Water Service Group Scholarship Program, we hope to support the next generation of leaders in the communities we serve,” said Martin A. Kropelnicki, president and chief executive officer. “As they embark upon the next stage of their lives, we want to help young scholars who are bright, hard-working, and ambitious – those who share our commitment to making good things happen in their communities.”

To apply to the 2019 College Scholarship Program, students must be pursuing a degree in higher education and plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate study program at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the upcoming academic year. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement, community service, and financial need.

The annual scholarships are part of the group’s stockholder-funded philanthropic giving program and are not paid for by customers’ rates.

The program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. To date, the group has provided $300,000 in scholarships to students through the program.

To learn more about the scholarship program or to apply, California students can visit www.calwater.com/scholarship . Hawaii students may visit www.hawaiiwaterservice.com/scholarship and Washington students should go to www.wawater.com/scholarship.

The application period for the sixth annual program will close at 1 p.m. PT on Monday, June 17.

Winners will be announced in August.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Division 35 of the California Retired Teachers Association has awarded its annual mini-grants to local teachers for special projects.

Sara Yurosko, a fourth grade teacher at Kelseyville Elementary, received a $200 mini-grant from the association.

The grant funds were used to purchase a skeleton and a human organ model.

Yurosko was one of four recipients selected from the 14 applicants.

The skeleton and human organ model enable her students to learn the location of bones and organs in relation to each other. The students are able to have a “hands-on” experience by handling and identify parts of the human body.

Another recipient was Cory Cunningham, music teacher at Kelseyville High School. He was awarded a mini-grant for the purchase of new music for the Mariachi Band.

Cunningham offered that the music will, “help to promote the program by providing an authentic experience for all of us. We can then spread the experience to our greater community raising awareness and appreciation for this beautiful music.”

Other recipients this year were:

– Katherine Wiley, Konocti Unified School District, for the repair of band instruments.

– Nathalie Antus, Pomo Elementary School, for a Read Naturally Program with two portable CD players.

Mini-grants are awarded each year to local teachers around the county. The primary requirement is that the project enrich the classroom and can be used over and over again. Yurosko’s and Cunningham’s projects are perfect examples of what CalRTA was looking for.

Elva Hohn, mini grant chairperson, offered congratulations to this year’s winners for their very worthy projects in support of student learning.

Hohn added, “Hopefully, we will continue to be able to help more teachers in the future.”

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Redbud branch of the Lake County Library will offer free beginning classes in English as a second language.

Classes will take place on Wednesdays on May 8, 15 and 29 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The library is located at 14785 Burns Valley Road in Clearlake.

Elder Patrick Mullin and Sister Linda Mullin will teach the classes. Between them they have extensive experience in teaching ESL and Spanish. Elder Mullin says, “The classes will emphasize pronunciation and grammar. We'll talk about topics the students want so we'll do that, but pronunciation and grammar will always be a focus, whatever the topic. Speaking is the focus, not writing. We'll learn a little English, but we're going to have fun doing it“

The library will supply the textbook for use during class, scratch paper for taking notes, and pens and pencils. The class is free and no registration is required.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Upper Lake Women's Protective Club has awarded its latest scholarship.

Last month, Linda Bushta, former Upper Lake librarian, presented a $500 scholarship to Brenna Sanchez.

This was the second of two scholarships that the Women’s Protective Club awarded for the 2018-19 academic year.

Sanchez is a 2018 graduate of Upper Lake High School.

She is currently enrolled at Mendocino College with plans to earn an AA in health sciences with the goal of choosing a career in health care.

She loves Lake County and has been a patron of the Upper Lake Library her entire life.

Elizabeth Moreno also received a $500 scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year.

One of the favorite functions of the Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club is awarding scholarships to girl grads from the Upper Lake High School who are heading off to college.

Back in 1916, the Women's Protective Club member’s and their husbands donated the land, as well as the funds and the actual building of the Upper Lake Library.

It was privately funded until the 1940s, when the library became a tax-funded operation.

The library then joined the Lake County Library System in 1975 after the county library system formed in the 1970s.
