NAACP awards memorial scholarships

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The local chapter of the NAACP recently awarded its 2015 Clarence Wright Sr. Memorial Scholarship to four local high school graduates.

The $500 scholarships were given out at the Clearlake Mendo Lake Credit Union offices in Clearlake on June 20.

Awards went to students Maria Perez and Tietta Mitchell of Lower Lake High School; Nicole Corsetti, Middletown High School; and Crystal Zepeda, Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.

Family members of the chapter's past co-founder Clarence Wright Sr., were in attendance, including his wife, Sarah; sons, Clarence Jr., Howard and Carlton; and granddaughter, Shellaunda Foster.

The NAACP thanked its sponsors, patrons and participating members for their generous donations.

Those individuals and organizations include Nylander's Red & White Market, Clearlake Oaks; St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake, Clearlake; Mendo Lake Credit Union, Clearlake and Lakeport; Valley Glass Co., Clearlake; Burton Jernigan State Farm Insurance, Lower Lake; Backyard Garden Oasis, Middletown; Fairfield Inn & Suites Marriott, Ukiah; and the Neal family of South San Francisco.

Special thanks went to Sarah Anzano, branch manager of Mendo Lake Credit Union in Clearlake for the use of their facility for this celebration, and the city and county dignitaries who came to support the event.
