Mendocino College Foundation announces five new student scholarships

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendocino College Foundation announced it will award five new $1,000 scholarships for 2012-2013 – one for culinary arts, one for theater and music, two rewarding volunteer service and one general interest scholarship.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, March 1, before 4 p.m.

“We are very excited to see our scholarship program growing. These opportunities were made possible by donors who want to help students achieve their dreams,” said Katie Wojcieszak, executive director of the Mendocino College Foundation which oversees the scholarship program.

The Les Gregg Family Scholarship, named for one of Ukiah’s esteemed restaurateurs, will be awarded to a student in Mendocino College’s culinary arts program.

Those interested in fine arts with an emphasis in theater and music might qualify for the new John Bogner award.

An intrepid entertainer, local Realtor and former member of the College Foundation’s board of directors, Bogner leaves a lasting legacy.

A general interest scholarship named in memory of beloved College Foundation directors Harry and Joan Bistrin will also be awarded.

The new Halliday scholarships will focus on rewarding two individuals with exemplary volunteer service.

This award, named for Mendocino south coast residents Joe and Dorothy Halliday, includes an internship component that reflects the couple’s strong and long-lasting work ethic.

Their wish was that priority be given to Point Arena High School graduates attending Mendocino College.

“I encourage anyone planning to attend Mendocino College in fall 2012 to apply. Last year nearly 150 students received awards through our scholarship program,” said scholarship coordinator Lana Eberhard.

Eberhard has posted tips on writing an award winning essay and asking for letters of recommendation on the College’s website.

Other scholarship opportunities offered outside of the college can also be found in the scholarship section of the Mendocino College website.
