The Lodge at Blue Lakes is a premier family resort and hotel with a Special Events Center located in Upper Lake on the picturesque shores of Blue Lakes.
The lodge is committed to the development of youth in academics while supporting local communities through the Academic Decathlon.
“We were so inspired by the enthusiasm of the competition for the scholarship awards The Lodge at Blue Lakes recently donated, we decided to continue as a major sponsor of the Academic Decathlon for Lake and Mendocino counties’ schools,” according to Maryann and Peter Schmid, owners of The Lodge at Blue Lakes.
Last year, The Lodge provided college scholarships for top-scoring students at each participating school.
For the 2011-12 competition, they will once again sponsor the college scholarships, as well as host educational workshops for students and parents based on this year’s theme: “The Age of Empire.”
Last year’s competition hosted six school districts from Lake, Mendocino and Colusa counties, with 78 students competing for individual and team awards.
The Academic Decathlon, which has been facilitated by LCOE for over 15 years, is a competitive event honoring "athletes of the mind.”
The competition consists of ten tests, and provides students the opportunity to participate in an educational forum, fostering a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation, and self-esteem.
Communication tests include essay, prepared and impromptu speech, and interview. Written tests include art, music, language/literature, mathematics, economics, science, and social science, along with a written and oral Super Quiz. An optional art and poetry contest is also offered for interested students.
This year’s Academic Decathlon will be held on two Saturdays.
On Jan. 28, 2012, students will compete in the interview, speech, and essay portion of the competition, and over 50 community members will be needed as volunteer judges.
On the morning of Feb. 4, 2012, the second day of the competition, students will take their written tests, and in the evening the public is invited participate in a SuperQuiz relay and awards ceremony.
