Carlé Students got crafty as they participated in building a wall for Clarks Island.

“All right, take your shoes off,” shouted Massey Burke and Holly Harris.

Shoes? Upon taking their shoes off, the students – Christine McQuown, Karalena Cole, Ellie Hackler, Tucker Barnett, Leah Davidson and Aaron Mearns – noticed piles of hay, clay and a water hose.

Yes, they were going to build a wall the old-fashioned way, clumping together these mud pie-like substances using their feet.

Other students – Dylan Nevarez, Gerald Stahlman, Lucas Powell, Paul Larue, Jorge Vieira, Ellie Hackler and David Echols – later placed these “feet-made” blocks together to build up the wall.

Bosses Day was on Oct. 16. We would like to publicly honor Principal Ed Zander for all of his hard work and dedication.

DeVry University sent representative Brett Webber on the morning of Oct. 21 to explain the possibilities DeVry University has to offer.

“I thought he gave a wonderful presentation, everyone enjoyed the very hands-on experience,” said Verna Rogers.

Later that morning, the clock struck 10:21 a.m. At that very moment students were “shaken up” to hear the heart and soul of Carlé, Barbara Dye, announce it was time for an earthquake drill.

The students scrambled under the tables for a few moments practicing safety precautions. When the teachers knew it was safe, students and teachers headed to the field where their names were called aloud. Everyone did a fantastic job; securing safety for all.

Carlé High School is almost a quarter of the way through the school year. Time flies when you're having fun.

Student of the week last week was Karalena Cole. Teacher Alan Siegel said, “She is one of the sweetest and hardest working people here, always helps everyone out and looks out for the school.”

The mug contest ends this Friday. Students who have already turned in their creatively designed mugs are Karalena Cole, Stevie Cook, Tommy Galli, Robert Potter, Derek Grace , Lisa Davis, Darren Gasperoni, Kayellia Lansdowne, Nate Oberdorf, Justin Singer, Shanea Bullard, Bianca Frias, Arturo Negrete, Ellie Hackler and Nia Edmonds.

Interact Club begins as students Kayellia Lansdowne, Paul Larue, Lucas Powell, Ittaly Heart, Stevie Cook and Karalena Cole sign up to be part of helping out the community. The Rotary representative that the Interact Club is working with is Kinene Barzine.

“We are looking forward to another successful year at Carlé with the Interact Club,” said Principal Zander. “We will be supporting the upcoming TV8 news show being filmed at Carlé, along with the Rotary's Christmas dinner on Dec. 11 at Burns Valley, and the seafood boil on Feb. 26 at the Highlands Senior Center.”

Odyssey of the Mind is up and running again this year. OEM is a creative, problem-solving competition between students of different schools. The more creative the students get, the more points they earn. The key to this game is to think outside the box while solving a problem using a creative expression such as acting and art. Students meet on Fridays during sixth period.

Upcoming portfolios will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28. Ryan Cumpston will present his at 1:45 p.m., with Jeremy Burton's at 2:15 p.m.

Student Council is being led by President Stevie Cook and Vice President Karalena Cole to set up this year¹s Harvest Fest on Friday, Oct. 29.

All the advisory representatives are working hard to make this day full of fantastic games and fun for the school. Who knows what creepy crawlers might spring up for this event?

Karaleena Cole is a student at Carle Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
