NEWPORT BEACH – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is the keynote luncheon speaker Saturday, Aug. 8, during the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) convention in Newport Beach.

The 19th biennial convention, hosted by the California Caucus, is at the Radisson Newport Beach Resort Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7 through 9.

NWPC’s aggressive statewide fundraising effort was critical to Congresswoman Sanchez’s win during her first congressional run in 1996. She’s now in her seventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She represents California's 47th Congressional District in Orange County.

A recognized leader on national security, intelligence, and counterterrorism issues, Sanchez serves as the Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism. She is also a member of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science and Technology.

A panel discussion Saturday morning, Aug. 8, is on Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. It will be moderated by Karen Humphrey, executive director of California Postsecondary Education Commission. Panelists include Diane Milutinovich, associate athletic director emeritus of California State University Fresno, who filed a Title IX law suit against Fresno State, and Margie Wright, National Collegiate Athletic Association division 1 softball coach, who recently reached a Title IX settlement with Fresno State.

Afternoon breakout sessions are on health care reform; fair pay; reproductive health: accessibility and affordability; women elect: filling the pipeline; money management for women; and small group conversations with women leaders.

The Saturday evening gala, Aug. 8, features California State Controller John Chiang, who will receive the “Good Guy” award and be a keynote speaker. Controller Chiang has long championed financial literacy and is using his position to empower working families.

Silent auction items for Saturday night festivities include two signed lithographs by March Fong Eu, California Secretary of State, 1975-1994; beautifully framed and signed colored pencil drawing by U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein; and a week’s stay at a three-bedroom home in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Convention registration of $200, through Aug. 3, includes Friday Diversity Reception, Saturday breakfast, keynote luncheon, breakout sessions and evening gala. Register at www.nwpc.org or www.nwpcca.org .

A special Saturday-only pricing of $125 includes three meals plus plenary and break-out sessions, subject to availability. Contact Clare Giesen before August 3, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 202-785-1100.

Hotel reservations must be made directly with the Radisson Newport Beach Resort at 949- 833-0570 or www.radissonnewportbeach.com .

The National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) is a multi-partisan, multicultural grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women's participation in politics and creating a political power base to achieve equality for all women. Founded in 1971, NWPC prides itself in increasing the number of pro-choice women elected and appointed into office every year.
