Galli: Thanks for help with church outreach

Thank you so much for posting our event in your great community newspaper.

I have been following Lake County News for over a year before we moved to Clearlake from Vancouver, Wash., and always enjoy the concise, up-to-date news that you provide for Lake County.

I also want to thank all who attended Outreach in the Park last Saturday and Sunday and all those who helped to make it such a great success.

I know there were over 200 people that read the article Lake County News published for us and I know many of those folks attended. We were able to feed and provide clothing for over 400 people.

City Gate Church is grateful for all the community support and we are happy to call Clearlake our home.

Thank you again Lake County News for making us feel welcome.

Lakeport Senior Center held a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels on Saturday, July 31, and raised $3,000.

The center would like to thank all of the vendors and volunteers who made this event possible.

Denise Johnson with the Victim Witness Program and McGruff the Crime Dog came out. Ed McDonald with California Highway Patrol, Frances Ford a senior advocate, Debbie Allen with blood pressure and diabetes testing, attorney Dennis A. Fordham, Betty Lou Surber with crafts, and Sandy and Brooke Hanson with Mary Kay all made the event possible.

A 50/50 raffle was part of the fundraiser and winners were drawn. First place was $1,442 and went to Agnes Carey.

Second place was won by Mark Rivas for $200 and John Boardman for $100, who gave back half his winnings to the Meals on Wheels program.

To find out how you can get involved and help the center make a difference by volunteering call 707-263-4218.

Jonathan Crooks, is assistant director of the Lakeport Senior Center in Lakeport, Calif.

Smith: You're on your own

On Aug. 5 I received a call from a gentleman from Ohio. This person verified who I was, then proceeded to tell me that he received a check, via FedEx, in the amount of $2,500. I asked this man to read me the numbers on the check, and sure enough, this was my exact bank account numbers.

I pleaded with this man, not to cash the check, because somehow someone has found a way to get my account information, for which he promised not to.

I then proceeded to check my account and – lo and behold – someone had cashed a check against my account in the amount of $1,950. Honestly, I believe that the teller was supposed to verify funds before cashing the check but, somehow, that didn't happen.

I stopped all payments on my account, made a sheriff's report and came home to a continuation of receiving calls from other honest people from New York, New Jersey, Michigan, another from Ohio and here in our own wonderful state, California.

During this time, my fiancée had the same issue happen also, with calls from New York and Delaware.

I called the FBI. They took my information, but told me that I should contact the Secret Service, because this isn't their job.

When I got through to the Secret Service, the lady who spoke to me told me that they really can't help me because many times this comes out of Nigeria and that it isn't their jurisdiction.

She really seemed disinterested and I had to practically force all of my information down her throat.

I'm on my own. The only thing protecting me is the sheriff's report, or else the bank will charge my account for this.

On Aug. 7 I received another call, this time from Louisiana.

All I can say is, “You're on your own.”

I just wanted to thank all my friends and customers for stopping by my grand opening on Sunday, July 31, to support me – it meant so much to me!

It is amazing to me how many loyal customers I have acquired in just the few weeks I have been open.

I hope that Harley Hippie's always will be the Northshore's only coffee shop and hot spot but that we will continue to provide everyone with excellent coffees and more in the years to come.

Many thanks to Elizabeth Larson, editor of www.lakeconews.com for her article, and to the staff for its support of Harley Hippie's Coffee Shop.

Thanks also to the trio that played at my grand opening – Hillary, Moe & Woody. They were fantastic and we hope to have them play at Harley Hippie's again real soon.

Jeanne Bower, the Harley Hippie, owns Harley Hippie’s Coffee Shop & Internet Café on Highway 20 in Lucerne, Calif.
