Lyle: Count him out on call

Details

I won't be participating in Congressman Mike Thompson's phone discussion. I voted for him, and might again, but his office people have told me that I can't send an e-mail to him (or his office) unless I have some sort of permission.

I can see how our representative might get a lot of emails, and that they might reflect both positive or negative. But, the position of a senator or representative supposedly exists because we can't all go to Washington to vote.

And, it seems to me that email is the best and quickest way for any of us to let our representative know how we feel.

But, no ... I am told (by the people in his Napa office) I can't use the e-mail to tell my representative how I feel. Seems a bit disdainful to me.

When election comes up again ... I think I'll ask those running if I can e-mail them if they are elected.

Jim Lyle lives in Yountville.

Graham: Successful sale raises money for library

Details

Published: 29 October 2007
The Friends of the Middletown Gibson Library Fall Book Fair held on Saturday, Oct. 20, was a great success. Bags of books sold from $3 to $5, and we raised over $1,138 which will go towards book purchases and library supplies for the benefit of the community. Thank you, book lovers!

Special thanks to the Lions Club for the use of their tables and Hardester’s Market for the balloons and refreshments.

The heart of our success is, as always, our volunteers, who organize and staff our book sales as well as contributing many hours throughout the year to sorting and boxing donated books. What a great group of people who can get the job done and have fun doing it!

Carolyn Graham is secretary of the Friends of the Middletown Gibson Library. She lives in Hidden Valley Lake.

Bach: No to Cal Water rate hike

Details
Written by: Craig Bach
Published: 26 October 2007
An open letter to the California Public Utilities Commission:

We the citizens of Lucerne, California, and customers of California Water Service, would like to take this opportunity to oppose California Water Services' proposed rate hike.

Their last rate hike went into effect last year, and our only benefit has been warnings of high THM levels, and a 5 day “boil your water” notice. This resulted in hardships for many of residents here, not the least of whom were the restaurants and schools.

California Water Service did grudgingly provide individual gallon jugs of drinking water, but this wasn't widely advertised, and most of the local ratepayers were not made aware of the opportunity.

The company has secured a loan for the upgrade of the water plant, and still hasn't even gotten that off the ground. The original plans for the new plant were far beyond the simple requirements for Lucerne, and would have resulted in even higher rates for a “gold-plated system.”

Lucerne is NOT a wealthy community, and doesn't need a company whose sole function is to profit as much as possible at the expense of its citizens.

We strongly urge you to reject California Water Services proposed rate hike. Lucerne needs actually drinkable water, not higher rates.

Craig Bach is a director of the Lucerne Community Water Organization, and writes on behalf of that organization and LucerneFLOW.

Konocti Christian Academy: Thanks for relocation help

Details
Written by: Michelle Scully
Published: 25 October 2007
Only 84 days elapsed from receiving approval of our request to relocate Konocti Christian Academy (KCA) to the Lake County Fairgrounds until the new doors opened on Sept. 10.

The entire experience and construction project was facilitated by the efforts of many businesses and individuals. It would have been nearly impossible to accomplish such a herculean feat without the cooperation we received.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the Lake County Fair CEO Richard Persons and the Fair Board consisting of Sham Cochrane, Janeane Bogner, Mary Pat Adams, Annette Hopkins, Bill Magoolaghan, Jerry McQueen, Gary Taylor and Bob White. Their support of our community and shared desire to see good things happen here in Lake County was overwhelming.

Thank you to all who believed it could be done and helped it to happen!
