Fowler: Power plays leave out the voters

Details
Written by: Kathy Fowler
Published: 17 July 2008
It is time to stop the congressional power plays and drill where the oil is. On shore and offshore. This is stupid. The majority of Americans approve. Since when does Washington do as it pleases to appease the donors and not listen the the voters?

Frankly I am disgusted with the whole process as it has become. Did not one have vision? Could they not see the China issues? Their growth? Their consumption?

It was everywhere to see. Both Democrats and Republicans are responsible. I see both as two opposing teams focused only on being the winning team. Don't think about us, the taxpayer.

Gebhard: Spotting an unsettling pattern

Details

Am I the only one who sees a pattern here? Our armed forces desperately stretched thin overseas, mercenaries based in the United States, detention camps supposedly for illegal aliens, built all over the country, and the end of restrictions on martial law and wiretapping.

I was worried about a fair and legal election after two highly questionable ones, now I am even more ill at ease. Perhaps, I was missing the point.

Just possibly, the aristocracy are not interested in keeping our republic as it now stands. It is possible that they want an oligarchy in principle as well as in practice. We are already an oligarchy, governed by the rich and powerful. But they just might be ready to come out of the closet. After all, the wealth and power of the oil companies, are all they care about. Oil and money are power.

Soon, all natural resources will be fought over as well. Clean fresh water is becoming scarcer, as the greatest reservoirs were the polar caps which are melting. The mountains have their ice caps melting, and we are burning our forests down, which is also a great reservoir for fresh water. How are we going to support the gigantic population now extant in our world?

Water and is necessary to all life, and oil to modern industrial society. So we fight and kill to make our industries richer and more powerful. Instead of leading the world in green technology and alternative energy, as we are in the position to do. We instead fight over old tech, oil.

America needs to encourage the greatest nation of innovators and creative minds in history, to invent us out of our deep financial pit, help them catalyze a new industrial revolution that will keep our standard of live from an eventual drop.

Groups ask for community's support

We have been hearing that the Fourth of July was the safest and most relaxing Fourth of July celebration in many years. Many attribute this to the very limited number of family fireworks displays, which in turn was the result of not selling safe and sane fireworks this year.

There was a downside to this positive result. Four nonprofit organizations rely on the sale of safe and sane fireworks to support their activities throughout the upcoming year. these four organizations lost a combined income that historically averages $51,000.

These organizations are the Lake County Channel Cats, Clear Lake High School Booster Club, Miss Lake County Scholarship Organization and Terrace School’s Parent and Teacher Organization.

If you were one of those who enjoyed the safer and more relaxing Fourth of July celebration, and you would like to help these four organizations offset the lost revenue a donation would be a marvelous gesture of appreciation. The four organizations have agreed to share equally all donations received and agreed that checks should be made out to CLHS Booster Club and mailed to P.O. Box 87, Lakeport CA 95453.

Tom Jordan, CLHS Booster Club; Jennifer Hanson, Channel Cats; Trish Combs, Miss Lake County Scholarship Organization, Renee Teverbaugh, Terrace PTO.
