Johnson: New rules for animal control services in Clearlake

Details
Written by: Denise Johnson
Published: 23 October 2009
This letter is to inform you that as of Nov. 1, 2009, the city of Clearlake will no longer be contracting with the county for the same level of animal control services that were provided in the past, as the city will be contracting with the county for limited animal shelter services, only.

The new contract specifically states that the county will only be allowed to take Clearlake animals from Clearlake City Animal Control Officer Lee Lambert or his designated representative. The representative must be approved by Sgt. Craig Clausen of Clearlake Police Department.

Animals from the city limits of Clearlake must be taken to the Clearlake impound area, located on Airstrip Road at the Clearlake Public Works facility from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Anyone bringing an animal to the facility must pay the $85 fee to drop off the animal and must show proof of residence address within the city limits (such as a current Pacific Gas & Electric Co. bill, phone bill, etc.). Without this proof the animal will not be accepted. This fee is per animal regardless of species or age, or whether owned, stray or abandoned.

Any calls for animal control service within the city limits of the city of Clearlake, including after hours emergencies, must be directed to the Clearlake Police Dispatch at 707-994-8251.

Animal owners wishing to re-home their animal should check with rescue groups via a search engine on your computer, or you can go to the Lake County Animal Care & Control Web site www.co.lake.ca.us and click on the link to the rescue groups listed on the left.

Currently, per the new contract, the city of Clearlake will be doing its own licensing of pets living in the city limits. Please contact Clearlake City Hall at 707-994-8201 to find out how to go about having that done.

The animals from the city limits of Clearlake will be housed at the Lake County Animal Care & Control facility, located at 4949 Helbush Drive in Lakeport. If you are missing an animal from the city limits of Clearlake and cannot find it at the Clearlake facility on Airstrip Road, please check for it at the county’s facility.

Remember that coming in to personally see the animals at the shelter is always the best way to identify your animal as we always have several of one breed and/or color pattern which makes it difficult for us to positively identify an animal over the telephone. However, you are also welcome to call us ahead of your visit at 707-263-0278 to see if we have any animals in our custody that fit the general description of your missing animal.

Citizens can also access our Web site which is updated daily at www.co.lake.ca.us and just follow the links to animal control to see if your pet’s photo and description have been placed on our site or the lost and found site that day. Please remember that just because you don’t see your pet on the Website does not mean we don’t have it; it may just mean we haven’t had it long enough to get its photo in the system.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Clearlake Animal Control please direct your calls and letters to the Clearlake City Council, 14050 Olympic Drive, Clearlake, 95422, telephone 707-994-8201, fax 707-995-2653; or Clearlake Police Chief Allan McClain, also at 14050 Olympic Drive, telephone 707-994-8251, fax 707-994-8918.

Denise Johnson is director of Lake County Animal Care & Control.

With your help, we were able to send our two young women, Taylor-Paige Butler, Miss Lake County, and Katherine Murphy, Miss Lake County’s Outstanding Teen, to the Miss California /Miss California’s Outstanding Teen Pageants held in June of this year in Fresno.

Your support has also enabled our girls to participate in various community events this year. A heartfelt thank you to all!

At this time we are busy planning our 2010 Miss Lake County Pageant which will be held on Jan. 23, 2010, at the Soper-Reese Theatre in Lakeport.

Young women who live, work or attend school in Lake County and are between the ages of 13 to 16 for the Teen Program and 17 to 24 for the Miss Program are eligible to compete.

Please check our Web site at www.misslakeco.org for information or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . You can also call 707-277-0707.

We have scheduled two orientations (you only need to attend one) for Sunday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. each day at the Mendo-Lake Credit Union Meeting Room, 963 11th St., Lakeport. These are question and answer sessions to let you know what our program is all about. Your parents are more than welcome to attend.

Rehearsals will start on Saturday, Nov. 21, and will generally be held every Saturday, except for holiday weekends, until the date of the pageant.

We encourage all young ladies to attend. You will have a lot of fun and meet new friends as well.

We look forward to meeting you in November and giving you the opportunity to not only compete for the titles of Miss Lake County and Miss Lake County’s Outstanding Teen, but also go on to compete in the Miss California and Miss California’s Outstanding Teen Pageants. These are also the preliminary pageants to Miss America!

And, remember, everyone who competes will win a scholarship award.

Wilson: Mensa offers scholarships to local students

Details
Written by: Tom Wilson
Published: 21 October 2009
Each year American Mensa, a national high IQ society, offers scholarships to those who wish to further their education at any accredited American institution of post-secondary education. Redwood Empire Mensa, which encompasses Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte counties, is proud to participate in this program. Applicants need not belong to Mensa nor even qualify for membership.

The economy being what it is, I’m certain that there are many individuals in this area who could use this financial assistance in furthering their education. As far as our local Mensa chapter is concerned, the more applications we receive, the better.

Scholarships are awarded on local, regional and national levels, based upon an essay describing the applicant’s career, vocational or academic goals. Application forms can be downloaded from the Mensa Education and Research Foundation Web site, www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships .

Those who do not have Internet access may request applications by mailing a post-paid, self-addressed No. 10 envelope to: Mensa Foundation Scholarships, 30 Raymond Heights, Petaluma, CA 94952-4943.

Tom Wilson is scholarship chair of the Redwood Empire Mensa chapter. He lives in Petaluma.

Young: County's spirit produces a grateful AIDSWALK 2009

Details
Written by: Ken Young
Published: 14 October 2009

Community Care HIV/AIDS Project/Drop In Center wants to thank the citizens of Lake County for helping produce another successful AIDSWALK. With a $55 million cutback in the State Office of AIDS (who fund most of our programs) and cuts to social service agencies our clients depend on, we know that every penny counts.

The AIDSWALK 2008 funds provided continued resources for clients in a program that was bankrupted early. These resources included monthly food and gas vouchers and therapy for clients in crisis.

The diverse communities that make up Lake County came together and had a beautiful day in Austin Park. We want to thank the CLO United Methodist Church for their booth, choir, walkers and the loan of tables and enthusiastic volunteers.

So many participants helped make this a success in spite of very trying times. Thank yous go out to Loch Lomond Roadhouse for great food, Any Positive Change, Hospice Services, Moran’s Pharmacy, Lodi Pharmacy, CLO/Glenhaven Business Association, Lakeside Clinic and Dr. Marshall Kubota (and his great, big heart), Supervisor Denise Rushing, Stonewall Democratic Club, Lake County Pride, Yuba College students, Lake Center For Support, “Jack” and Alcoholics Anonymous.

CCHAP clients provided a great crafts booth featuring tie-dye clothing and jewelry. The band, “Lefty” played boogie dance music all day long and it was fun to dance and watch others enjoy themselves- rockin’ out with “Lefty.” The Lake County Department of Public Health stayed open all day and provided many fast HIV tests for folks who otherwise may not have been tested. Thank you city of Clearlake, police and fire departments. .

Donations are appreciated from Piedmont Lumber, Red &White Market, Rite-Aide, Foods Etc., Safeway and The Stonewall Democratic Club.

Great raffle prizes were furnished from Lake Place Resort, Lake Vu Cottages, Edgewater and Ferndale Resorts, Shannon Ridge, Buckingham Golf, Edwina Young and The Lucerne Neighborhood Association, Chuck Slocum, Hardester’s Market, Ting’s Thai Kitchen, Wine Country Salon, Studio 175, Bealuh’s Restaurant, Main Street Pizza, Middletown Beauty Center, Dream Salon & Nail Spa, Havy’s Restaurant, Mugshot’s Express and Ed & Linda’s.

We are indebted to our corporate sponsors who really “stepped up” to support us: Sutter Hospital, Lakeside Herbal Solutions and Liz Byrd, Moran’s Pharmacy and Lodi Pharmacy. A special thank you to Denise Rockenstein at The Record Bee/Clearlake Observer and Elizabeth Larson at www.lakeconews.com . Thank you so much Allan Markowski/PEG Channel 8 for the terrific TV infomercial.

Thanks again to Jan Molini, Kim White, Harold and Bill of “Our Stories Ourselves,” community radio 88.1 FM and all CCHAP and community walkers/volunteers.

Last but not least, a shout-out to our hard workin’ staff: Dennis, Marti, Michelle, Kathy, Sarah, Troy, Sandy and me.

Ken Young is the CCHAP Drop In Center Program coordinator.
