This Sunday, Aug. 15, marks the 65th anniversary of Japan’s surrender to the Allied Forces.
While the official end of the war did not come until Sept. 2, the end of fighting in the Pacific effectively marked the end of the fighting.
As a nation we cannot forget the tremendous sacrifice made by those who fought in World War II.
Congress recently passed legislation memorializing the end of World War II and helping pay tribute to these brave warriors.
Currently there are over 6,400 surviving veterans who served our country honorably during World War II who live within the boundaries of the First Congressional District.
We salute and thank each of them for a job well done, especially Laverne Mack from Napa, who has worked hard to ensure that our nation does not forget our World War II veterans.
And as we recognize and thank World War II veterans let us remember the dedication and sacrifice being made by all those in uniform who put their lives on the line each day for our country.
Congressman Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) represents the First Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.

Thank you so much for posting our event in your great community newspaper.
I have been following Lake County News for over a year before we moved to Clearlake from Vancouver, Wash., and always enjoy the concise, up-to-date news that you provide for Lake County.
I also want to thank all who attended Outreach in the Park last Saturday and Sunday and all those who helped to make it such a great success.
I know there were over 200 people that read the article Lake County News published for us and I know many of those folks attended. We were able to feed and provide clothing for over 400 people.
City Gate Church is grateful for all the community support and we are happy to call Clearlake our home.
Thank you again Lake County News for making us feel welcome.
Pastor Bert Galli and his family live in Clearlake, Calif.

The center would like to thank all of the vendors and volunteers who made this event possible.

Ed McDonald with California Highway Patrol, Frances Ford a senior advocate, Debbie Allen with blood pressure and diabetes testing, attorney Dennis A. Fordham, Betty Lou Surber with crafts, and Sandy and Brooke Hanson with Mary Kay all made the event possible.
A 50/50 raffle was part of the fundraiser and winners were drawn. First place was $1,442 and went to Agnes Carey.
Second place was won by Mark Rivas for $200 and John Boardman for $100, who gave back half his winnings to the Meals on Wheels program.
