Stonewall Club plans Harvey Milk remembrance May 22

LAKE COUNTY – In celebration of Harvey Milk's birthday on May 22, the Lake County Stonewall Democratic Club will donate significant books dealing with lesbian, gay, bisexual issues to the Lake County Library.

The donation will take place in the Redbud Library Conference Room at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. Light refreshments will be served. After the ceremony, a barbecue will be held, location to be disclosed. All LGBT people are invited as well as their friends and supporters.

The books are from the personal library of Harold Riley, former president and co-founder of the club.

“It is my hope that these books will be read, examined and discussed, and that they will increase knowledge so that our neighbors and fellow citizens will have a better understanding of the LGBT community,” said Riley.

The books to be donated range from a biography of the gay icon based on the prize-winning movie, a memoir by Judy Shepherd about her murdered son Matthew, for whom the Federal Hate Law was named, and two books about the “don’t ask, don’t tell” military policy.

The birthday of the openly gay supervisor was officially made “Harvey Milk Day” last last year when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the designation after two attempts by the State Congressman Mark Leno.
