EDD benefit payments now issued on new Money Network prepaid debit cards

Details
Written by: Employment Development Department
Published: 16 February 2024
Starting Feb. 15, the Employment Development Department begins issuing payments for unemployment, disability, and Paid Family Leave customers on new Money Network prepaid debit cards.

Benefit payments will no longer be issued on Bank of America debit cards. The EDD previously announced it was reaching out to its customers with related timelines and information to assist them in transitioning to Money Network Cards.

“Through our partnership with Money Network, we are enhancing how we deliver benefits to our customers,” said EDD Director Nancy Farias. “That includes introducing a direct deposit option later this year – the fastest, most secure method for receiving payments.”

Receiving Money Network cards

Individuals with active claims who qualified to receive benefit payments after January 15 were mailed an unfunded Money Network Card in preparation for the transition. It may take up to 14 business days from the date of qualification for the new card to arrive. Individuals who don’t receive their card after that period may contact Money Network at 1-800-684-7051.

Additional information about the Money Network Card is available at moneynetwork.com/edd in 21 of California’s top spoken languages. This includes instructions on how to activate the card, how to avoid fees and locate surcharge-free ATMs in local areas, FAQs, and translations of important “Terms and Fees” in all supported languages.

Customers can choose their preferred language by selecting the globe icon at the top of the webpage.

Closing Bank of America cards

April 15 is the last day individuals will be able to use their Bank of America debit card in this transition. Customers are encouraged to use or transfer any remaining balance on their debit cards before that date, or submit a request to Bank of America to be issued a check in the amount of remaining funds. Visit Debit Card for more information.

Help fight against fraud

The EDD will never request personal information by text message, email, or on social media. Text messages asking to activate a benefits debit card by selecting a link are scams. The EDD’s text messages only link to websites that include “edd.ca.gov.”

The department encourages customers to remain vigilant and safeguard their financial and personal information. Visit Help Fight Fraud for tips on how to avoid scams.

Upcoming service updates

Later this year, the EDD is set to implement a new direct deposit option for benefit payments. Details about this option will be provided in upcoming communications.

This service improvement is part of EDDNext, a multi-year transformation effort to improve the EDD customer experience — updating technologies and self-service choices, streamlining forms and notices, and enhancing staff efficiency through updated policies and procedures.

The goal is to make the EDD experience for customers a smoother and faster one.

Published: 14 February 2024
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife invites the public to attend its annual Salmon Information Meeting via webinar on Friday, Mar. 1, 2024, at 10 a.m.

The meeting will provide informational presentations on topics such as last year’s spawning escapement, estimates of forecasted ocean abundance and management goals for 2024 ocean salmon seasons.

Salmon Information Meeting details, informational materials and instructions for attendance will be published in advance of the event on CDFW’s Ocean Salmon Calendar of Events webpage.

The 2024 Salmon Information Meeting marks the beginning of a two month long public process used to develop annual sport and commercial ocean salmon fishing regulations and is also used to inform development of inland salmon fishing regulations later in the spring.

The process involves collaborative negotiations between west coast states, federal agencies, tribal co-managers and others interested in salmon fishery management and conservation.

California representatives will work together to develop a range of recommended ocean fishing season alternatives at the March 6 to 11 Pacific Fishery Management Council, or PFMC, meeting in Fresno, Calif. Final season recommendations will be adopted at the PFMC’s April 6-11 meeting in Seattle, Wash.

For more information related to the salmon preseason process, including contact information, timeline and other opportunities for public engagement, please visit the CDFW’s Ocean Salmon Calendar of Events webpage.

EDD transitioning to Money Network prepaid debit cards for benefit payments

Details
Written by: Employment Development Department
Published: 18 January 2024
The Employment Development Department, or EDD, is contacting unemployment, disability and paid family leave customers with timelines and information to assist in the transition from Bank of America debit cards to Money Network prepaid debit cards.

Starting Jan. 15, customers who qualify for payments will receive a payment issued to their Bank of America debit card as well as be sent an unfunded Money Network Card.

Beginning Feb. 15, benefit payments will be issued to the Money Network Cards and no longer to Bank of America debit cards. A new direct deposit option will also be added later this year.

The EDD asks customers to allow up to 14 business days for that unfunded Money Network Card to arrive.

For example, if an individual qualifies for a payment on Jan. 15, allow until February 1 to receive that new Money Network Card.

Individuals who don’t receive their card after that period may contact Money Network at 1-800-684-7051.

The cards will arrive in a plain, white, letter-sized envelope from the EDD with an Omaha, Nebraska return address since that is where the cards are manufactured.

Important details on what the EDD’s customers should expect throughout this transition are being delivered through personal emails and text messages in late January. The messaging follows letters, emails, and text messages sent in early December to all active customers at the time advising them of the upcoming change and key dates involved.

Check the EDD's debit card webpage for updates.

Closing out Bank of America cards

IMPORTANT DEADLINE: April 15, 2024, is the last day individuals will be able to use their Bank of America debit card. Customers are encouraged to use or transfer any remaining balance on their debit cards before that date.

Stay alert against fraud

The EDD will never request personal information by text message, email, or on social media. Text messages asking to activate a benefits debit card by selecting a link are scams. The EDD’s text messages only link to websites that include “edd.ca.gov”. The EDD encourages customers to remain vigilant and safeguard their financial and personal information. Visit Help Fight Fraud for tips on how to avoid scams.

Upcoming service updates

Starting this spring, the EDD will begin phasing in a new direct deposit option for payment of customers’ benefits administered by Money Network, which will be described in forthcoming communications from the EDD.

This update is one of many upcoming customer service enhancements that are being introduced as part of a transformational period for the Department called EDDNext.

The Department is dedicated to improving its customer experience, modernizing technologies and self-service options, simplifying forms and notices, and increasing efficiencies for staff with updated policies and procedures — all focused on making the experience of the EDD’s customers easier and faster.
