AB 1886, a bill by Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-North Coast) that would help the California Department of Fish and Game educate the aquaculture industry about sustainable practices, has been approved by both houses of the Legislature and is on the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown.
The bill would expand the duties of the Aquaculture Coordinator, a self-funded program within the DFG, and the industry will pay for the expansion.
“Aquaculture is an important industry in California, especially on the North Coast,” Chesbro said. “This clean, sustainable industry has benefited from the educational services provided by the Aquaculture Coordinator program within Department of Fish and Game. The California Aquaculture Association has asked to pay for an expansion of this program by increasing licensing fees the industry pays. This legislation establishes a new fee structure and clarifies the role of the Aquaculture Coordinator position.”
AB 1886 also requires the DFG to ensure revenue from these fees is applied to the Aquaculture Coordinator program and provide an accounting of the program to the Legislature and the state’s Aquaculture Development Committee.
The main benefit the industry in California receives from the aquaculture coordinator program is education about industry practices, said Greg Dale, regional manager for Coast Seafoods Co. in Eureka, a major producer of oysters on Humboldt Bay.
“The coordinator helps us educate the industry on sustainable aquaculture practices,” said Dale, a past president of the California Aquaculture Association. “The program also helps us educate the public that aquaculture is a green and sustainable industry.”
The California Aquaculture Association asked to be able to pay higher fees to expand the coordinator program, Dale added.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Chamber of Commerce is seeking German food vendors for its third annual Oktoberfest.
The event will be on Main Street, between First and Fourth streets, in historic downtown Lakeport on Saturday, Oct. 6.
In addition to German food vendors, the chamber is seeking other types of vendors for the festival.
Oktoberfest features “Showcase The Band” during the afternoon offering a large variety of German music, standards and crowd participation with games and songs.
The evening street dance beginning at 6 p.m. will have the talents of Jimi Z’s band until 10 p.m. Both of these bands keep the crowds on their feet continuously. During the day there will be roving accordion players.
In addition, Showcase the Band features a variety of activities in which the public is invited to participate.
Also during the day, Oktoberfest offers such fun activities as the Rubber Ducky Race for adults and children; a doggy (all breeds) costume contest, open to all breeds and the now World Famous Dachshund Derby Race, open only to dachshunds.
This year they are adding two new contests: beer pong and a washer tournament.
The Oktoberfest official emcee, Tony Barthel, will have his Oktoberfest Ladies assist him as he invites public participation throughout the day in some wild and wacky contests.
A large variety of microbrews will be offered for tastings during the afternoon on Third Street, where other beverages will also be offered for sale.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Lake County Websites & Computer Repair offers monthly computer workshops for novices every fourth Saturday.
This month’s workshop is entitled “Safety on the Internet.”
It will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at 15642 Armstrong St. in Middletown in the Jazzercise Center (two blocks behind the post office).
The workshop features hands-on learning for beginning to intermediate computer users. Learn about free anti-virus programs, storing passwords, what is safe to click on and what to avoid, and how to avoid and remove viruses.
The presenter, Mark Rudiger, is the owner of Lake County Websites & Computer Repair in Middletown and has more than 18 years of experience installing, trouble-shooting, and working with computers.
If you have a laptop, bring it along and connect to the high-speed Internet. If you don’t, you will still get all the same information as Rudiger’s laptop screen will be projected on a 120-inch screen so you can follow along.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Middletown Area Merchants Association (MAMA) Board of Directors has announced changes in the group’s meeting schedule and meeting day.
The association will return to its format of holding its monthly membership meeting in the morning from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and its mixer the same evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The board also announced the meeting/mixer day will change to the third Tuesday of each month.
These changes were made because most members find it easier to attend a morning meeting and to avoid conflicts with other events going on in the area.
This month’s meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the HUM Cooperative Center in the Middletown Plaza at 21037 Calistoga St., Suite No. 8.
This month’s mixer will be hosted by and held at WestAmerica Bank, 21058 Calistoga St.
All meetings and mixers are open to the public.
