California gasoline and diesel demand fell in third quarter of 2012, fuel tax data says

California’s gasoline consumption declined 1.3 percent in the third quarter of 2012, according to fuel tax data released by Betty T. Yee, First District Member of the California State Board of Equalization (BOE).

Diesel consumption declined 4.9 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

“Third quarter consumption shows Californian’s usage is still sensitive to the impact of gas and diesel prices on family budgets,” said Yee.

BOE’s fuel tax report shows Californians consumed 3.68 billion gallons of gasoline in the third quarter of 2012, a 1.3 percent decline from the 3.73 billion gallons consumed during the third quarter of 2011.

In California, the average price of gasoline in the third quarter of 2012 was $4.05 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price of gasoline in the third quarter was $3.73, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

In September 2012, California’s gasoline consumption declined 1.4 percent while the average price increased 24 cents to $4.21 per gallon.

California’s diesel consumption declined 4.9 percent in the third quarter of 2012 to 678 million gallons, compared to 713 million gallons in the third quarter of 2011.

In California, the average price of diesel fuel in the third quarter of 2012 was $4.20 per gallon. Nationally, the average price of diesel fuel in the third quarter was $3.94, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).  

California’s diesel consumption declined 9.4 percent while average diesel prices increased 40 cents in September 2012.

The five-member California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is a publicly elected tax board.

The BOE collects more than $53.7 billion annually in taxes and fees supporting state and local government services. It hears business tax appeals, acts as the appellate body for franchise and personal income tax appeals, and serves a significant role in the assessment and administration of property taxes.
