LAKEPORT, Calif. – The 1970 western, “Little Big Man,” starring Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway and Chief Dan George, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday Sept. 11, at 1 and 6 p.m.
Entry to the film is by donation.
The picaresque adventures of 121-year-old Jack Crabb are wild, incredible, and filled with hilarious experiences and biting tragedy.
Growing up in the rough and tumble American West, Crabb is brought up by a Cheyenne tribe, is rescued by a strict pastor, marries a Swedish woman and loses her to Indian attack.
He eventually becomes Gen. George Armstrong Custer’s scout at the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Director Arthur Penn adeptly mixes the ludicrous with the serious as if to mediate the irony and complexity of history.
Many have drawn correlations between the message of this film and the events of the era when the film was made, during the Vietnam War.
The movie is sponsored by Mike Stempe, Pegasus Productions, and by Gary Olson, Big Valley Properties. Rated PG. Run time is 2 hours and 19 minutes.
The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, www.soperreesetheatre.com.
