This MGM film adaptation of Herman Melville’s 1851 great American novel relates a hair-raising story told by the sole survivor of a lost whaling ship about his captain's self-destructive obsession to hunt down an elusive white whale.
In a one-shot cameo, Orson Welles delivers the famous sermon, warning those who challenge the sea that they are in danger of losing their souls.
Shot in black and white, it’s a brilliant Wellesian scene that sets the mood for the coming disaster.
Directed by John Huston with script by Ray Bradbury.
The movie is sponsored by Diane Plante and by the Lakeport Yacht Club. Rated G. Run time is one hour and 56 minutes.
The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, www.soperreesetheatre.com.
