MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Middletown Art Center offers a weekend of art making as part of the Resilience Project.

On Saturday, May 5, from noon to 5 p.m., join instructor Shane Powers with your camera or cell phone for Photographing Resilience and a field trip nearby.

On Sunday May 6, join Laura Kennedy from noon to 5 p.m. for encaustic collage.

Both classes are open to adults and children age 12 and up, whether new to art making or professionals, and cost just $5.

“Encaustic, sometimes known as hot wax painting, is a mixture of heated beeswax and damar resin,” explained artist Lisa Kaplan. “Traditionally used in ancient Greece for Fayum Funeral portraits, encaustic saw a revival in the 1950s with the work of American Artist Jasper Johns. The thick medium lends itself to incorporation of objects within, particularly flat or semi-flat objects. Participants are invited to bring letters, leaves, textures, photos, and other mementos and objects of interest to include in their work. Other materials and supplies will be provided.”

Classes offered this weekend are some of the final Resilience classes. Still to come are Writing Resilience with Clive Matson and Casey Carney on May 12, Intuitive Painting with Sage Abella on May 19, and the final printmaking class on Sunday, May 20.

All classes run from noon to 5 p.m. Bring lunch or snacks, or plan to purchase something in town during break.

Be sure to catch one or several of the last few Resilience classes. Visit www.middletownartcenter.org/resilience for details and to pre-register as space is limited.

The year-long Resilience project culminates with exhibitions in multiple locations throughout the county, and a chapbook of writing and images created during the project.

MAC is grateful to the California Arts Council, a state agency for their support of Resilience and to Adventist Health and other local agencies and businesses for additional support.

Come join the folks at MAC for classes and events this weekend and throughout the year. Registration for MAC’s Adventures in Art and Storytelling summer camp, an extravaganza of visual and performing arts for children Kindergarten through grade nine, has also begun.

Visit www.MiddletownArtCenter.org to learn more or to become a MAC member and be a part of sustaining and growing the arts and culture in Lake County.
