UKIAH, Calif. – On Thursday, April 5, Mendocino College will host a free film screening followed by an audience discussion in Little Theatre starting at 6 p.m.
The one-hour and 10-minute documentary, “More than a Word” analyzes the NFL Washington football team and its use of the derogatory term “redskins” in its name.
Using interviews from both those in favor of changing the name and those against, “More Than a Word” presents a deeper analysis of the many issues surrounding the Washington team name. The documentary also examines the history of American Indian cultural appropriation.
More Than a Word offers a fascinating look inside the growing movement to change the name of the Washington football team. Directed by brothers John and Kenn Little, members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, the film traces how the word "redskin" evolved from being a term of slander to being embraced as the name of one of the NFL's most beloved franchises.
It also draws on the voices of American Indian activists and scholars to place this controversy within the wider context of American Indian history and racial stereotyping.
The Cleveland Indians recently removed their mascot, Chief Wahoo, in response to similar activists and movements against mascots and cultural appropriation.
This event is recommended for ages 13 and up.
