LAKEPORT, Calif. – The 1937 seagoing adventure, “Captains Courageous,” starring Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore and Freddie Bartholomew, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 1 and 6 p.m.
Entry to the film is by donation.
Based on Rudyard Kipling’s book about a humble Portuguese fisherman who patiently and kindly transforms a spoiled little rich kid into an honorable young man, this film honored Tracy with his first Best Actor Academy Award.
The movie is also notable for its great sailing footage shot off the coast of Gloucester, Newfoundland, especially the race scenes of two majestic ships under full sail.

Rated PG, in black and white, with run time of 1 hour 51 minutes.
