Soper Reese screens ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ Aug. 8

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The 1951 drama, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” starring Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh and Kim Hunter, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 1 and 6 p.m.

Entry to the film is by donation.

Based on a Tennessee Williams Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, “A Streetcar Named Desire” is a Hollywood landmark both for pushing the envelope of subject matter allowed on screen by 1950s censors, and for showcasing the “method” acting approach.

The electrifying film tells the feverish story of a faded Southern belle who presents herself as prim and proper, but carries unpleasant secrets about her past.

Her tragic downfall unfolds in the squalid, cramped French Quarter apartment of her sweet, kind sister and brutish brother-in-law.

Brando’s powerful portrayal of Stanley Kowalski is a hurricane of animalistic emotion and his “Stella” scene has become one of the most celebrated of Hollywood movies.

Tennessee Williams wrote of Vivien Leigh’s performance as the unbalanced Blanche DuBois: "She brought everything I intended to the role and even much more than I had dared dream of.”

The movie is sponsored by The UPS Store, Lakeport.

Rated PG, in black and white, with run time of two hours and two minutes.

The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, telephone 707-263-0577. Visit the theater online at www.soperreesetheatre.com.
