Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens hosts ‘Art in the Gardens’ Aug. 5

FORT BRAGG, Calif. – Set amidst the spectacular background of summer floral displays at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, the 25th anniversary of Art in the Gardens is fast approaching. The day-long juried fine art event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This celebration of creative expression, gorgeous gardens, music, beer, wine and food attracts more than 1,500 guests each year.

Artists will display their finest work at these breathtaking 47 acres by the sea, voted fifth best botanical garden in the nation by USA Today.

“The Mendocino Coast, and the region in general, is known as a diverse and creative community,” said Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Gardens’ Executive Director Molly Barker. “We have a major representation of California artists this year, with more than 75 artists spread across the Gardens.”

Over the past quarter of a century, Art in the Gardens has showcased extraordinary creations including ceramics, glass, paintings, sculpture, textiles and woodworking.

This year’s event will include a special focus on “art in action” giving everyone a chance to witness the creative process involved with several mediums.

This year’s featured artist, John Fisher, is internationally renowned for his Italian marble sculptures.

After 20 years in Italy, he established his studio in Northern California with his wife – and past Art in the Gardens featured artist – Sandy Oppenheimer.

For Fisher, sculpting is a profoundly philosophical and spiritual act of faith.

"My marble sculptures are carved spontaneously and intuitively, relying upon observation and the discipline of drawing,” he explained.

Fisher has participated in this beloved event for seven years. He believes Art in the Gardens “is a delightful opportunity to share your process and work, meet other artists and your community, and enjoy the splendor of gardens in full bloom … and it’s fun!”

All proceeds from this spectacular event will directly benefit the nonprofit Botanical Gardens and its mission to engage and enrich lives by displaying and conserving plants in harmony with Northern California Coastal ecosystems.
