Convicted sex offender gets six years

The Lake County District Attorney's Office reported Monday that Alex Paul Martinez, 36, of Kelseyville was sentenced Jan. 16 to six years, four months in state prison following three felony convictions involving sexual misconduct and one felony conviction of furnishing methamphetamine.

The report, from prosecutor Deputy District Attorney John R. DeChaine, who prosecuted the case, said Martinez pleaded guilty to the four charges Nov. 20, 2006.

Thomas Quinn and Bruce Laning served as Martinez’s defense attorneys at different stages of the case.

By making those pleas, DeChaine's report said, Martinez admitted unlawful sexual activity with each of his three juvenile victims and admitted to furnishing methamphetamine.

Det. Mike Curran of the Lake County Sheriff's Office investigated the three felony counts of unlawful sexual activity to which Martinez pleaded guilty, DeChaine's report noted.

The crimes against the three teenage girls occurred at different times and locations in Lake County. Two of the three girls informed Curran that methamphetamine furnished by Martinez played a significant role in Martinez’s crimes.

Given the similarities of the three investigations and the likelihood that each girl’s testimony would be required in all three trials, the cases were consolidated for prosecution following motions by the District Attorney’s Office.

Before sentencing Martinez, Judge Arthur Mann said that Martinez could only be granted probation in an unusual case given his criminal history. After finding no unusual circumstances, Judge Mann denied probation and committed Martinez to prison.

Mann said he found that the crimes were “predatory” in nature and required Martinez to register as a sex offender for the balance of his life for the protection of the public.

Since his arrest on Sept. 9, 2005, Martinez had remained in custody at the Lake County Jail on $30,000 bail.
