COBB, Calif. – Cal Fire said it is planning to carry out a large amount of pile burning on the Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest throughout the coming winter months.
Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest remains closed to all public use due to hazardous conditions as a result of the Valley fire.
As a result of the fire and drought-induced bark beetle mortality, 99 percent of the trees on the forest were destroyed, officials said.
Cal Fire reported that over the past year it and forest management staff have aggressively been salvage logging to remove these standing dead trees in preparation for replanting.
As a result of this logging there are hundreds of residual slash piles that must be disposed of, and Cal Fire said disposal of this material is not feasible by other means due to the volume of the material, number of piles and time frame in which it must be removed.
Cal Fire's goal is to restore the forest to a condition that is safe for public access. Allowing wood cutting, trail access and camping is an important part of having this public land in Lake County.
Burning the slash piles as soon as possible is a large step towards attaining this goal of opening up the forest, Cal Fire said.
Five teams of two firefighters will be assigned to conduct these pile burns throughout the winter beginning immediately on permissive burn days, according to Cal Fire.
A large scale smoke management plan has been completed in coordination with the Sacramento Air Resources Board and the Lake County Air Quality Management District. Cal Fire said its staff will follow the same rules and regulations that apply to the public.
Cal Fire thanked the public in advance for respecting and honoring the state’s decision to close the forest to public use, which it said allows the team to stay focused on the forest’s work plan in order to allow access as soon as is safe to do so.

Moke Simon is my choice for county supervisor and I urge the residents of District 1 to support him with their votes.
Born and raised in Middletown, Moke is a trusted leader and presence at every important community meeting and event – and no one can match his Herculean efforts to provide shelter and ongoing support to hundreds of Valley and Clayton fire victims.
Moke has the business experience the South County needs in its next supervisor. Ask anyone who’s benefited from one of the many job fairs he’s organized or any of the hundreds of local residents employed by the rancheria’s enterprises. Moke is the only candidate who has worked with local, state and federal officials for 20 years, negotiating multimillion dollar contracts that help drive the region’s economy.
Finally, people know that Moke is a man of his word, and when he says he will make county services more accessible and user-friendly – and bring county government directly to Lower Lake, Hidden Valley Lake, Anderson Springs and Middletown – I for one believe he will do it.
