Cobb Mountain Elementary students earn honors in WordMasters Challenge

COBB, Calif. – A team representing Cobb Mountain Elementary recently earned Highest Honors in the 2016-17 WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually.

The sixth grade team scored an impressive 177 points out of a possible 200 in the last of three meets this year, placing fifth in the nation.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge, sixth grader Bea Rodgers earned a perfect score of 20 in the recent meet. Nationally, only 15 sixth graders achieved this result.

Other students at Cobb Mountain Elementary who achieved outstanding results in the last meet of the year include fourth graders Ryan Taylor and Henry Thomas.

Sixth grader Bea Rodgers also earned Individual Highest Honors in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 57 of a possible 60 points. Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge by Marc Morita, Mary Sutton, and Trina Vargas.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.

They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

One dead, one injured in Thursday Highway 20 crash

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – One man died and another was seriously injured in a crash involving a pickup and a motorcycle on Highway 20 near Clearlake Oaks on Thursday afternoon.

Officer Kory Reynolds of the Clear Lake Area office of the California Highway Patrol said the agency was not releasing the identity of the man who died, a 59-year-old from Yolo driving a 2011 Ford F-350 pickup, pending the notification of next of kin.

Reynolds said the second crash victim, a man from Clearlake Oaks riding a 2017 BMW motorcycle, was transported via air ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

“Due to his injuries we were unable to identify the motorcyclist before he was flown out,” Reynolds said.

The CHP said the crash occurred at 12:10 p.m. Thursday on Highway 20 west of New Long Valley Road.

At the time the crash occurred, the driver of the pickup was traveling westbound on Highway 20 at an unknown rate of speed while the motorcyclist was headed eastbound at approximately 55 miles per hour, according to the CHP report.

For reasons that the CHP said investigators are yet to determine, the pickup crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane.

The motorcyclist attempted to take evasive action but was struck by the left front of the pickup and ejected from the motorcycle, the CHP said.

Radio reports indicated that when firefighters arrived the pickup was on its side, on the side of the road, with one patient trapped and unconscious.

The CHP said the pickup’s driver was declared dead at the scene.

A REACH air ambulance took the motorcyclist to Santa Rosa, the CHP said.

Reynolds said the man suffered major injuries, and that a Santa Rosa CHP unit that had responded to the hospital had been unable to get more information about the man because medics were still working on him.

The CHP said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the wreck.

The pickup driver was wearing his seat belt and the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, the CHP said.

Officer Joel Skeen is leading the crash investigation.
