LAKEPORT, Calif. — The community is invited to join in a special Independence Day celebration honoring America's 250th Anniversary on Saturday, July 4, at 8 a.m. in downtown Lakeport at the front of Museum Park.

The event will be sponsored by District 4 Supervisor Brad Rasmussen, Delta Iota Tau, Lakeport Kiwanis, Early Lake Lions and Operation Tango Mike.

The ceremony will commemorate the completion of Lakeport's Main Street American flag display, with the ceremonial posting of the final two flags, bringing the total to 140 American flags proudly flying along Main Street.

“The event celebrates a tradition that began nearly 30 years ago when Boy Scout Troop 42 displayed American flags on national holidays as a community service project. In 2011, Eagle Scout Derek Funderburg expanded the display to 98 flags through his Eagle Scout project,” said Delta Iota Tau Member Toni Funderburg. “After the troop dissolved, local volunteers, service organizations, and businesses stepped forward to continue the tradition.”

This year, the city of Lakeport installed new flag sleeves, while the Early Lake Lions Club, Delta Iota Tau and Mendo Mill partnered to purchase and assemble additional flags and poles, allowing the display to grow to its largest size ever.

The ceremony will include the posting of the final two American flags by local veterans, the Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem, a performance of "America the Beautiful," and military honors presented by the Lake County Military Honors Team, including a traditional three-volley salute and the playing of Taps.

"This celebration recognizes not only our nation's 250 years of history, but also the generations of Scouts, veterans, volunteers, service clubs, city and county staff, businesses, and community members who have worked together to keep this meaningful Lakeport tradition alive," said Supervisor Brad Rasmussen. "We invite everyone to join us as we honor our flag, remember those who have defended our freedoms, and celebrate the unity that makes our community and our nation strong."

The public is encouraged to attend this free community event and help commemorate America's 250th Anniversary while celebrating one of Lakeport's most cherished Independence Day traditions.
