Winter storm warning extended as snow falls across Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – After a day of snow and dropping temperatures, the National Weather Service has extended a winter storm warning for Lake County.

The warning, originally set to end on Tuesday, will now continue through Thursday at 6 a.m., forecasters said.

Snowfall was reported in Cobb and across other areas of the county on Tuesday, as well as hail in the afternoon and late evening snow on the Northshore.

The snow raised concerns for road conditions.

Lt. Dan Fansler, commander of the California Highway Patrol’s Clear Lake Area office, told Lake County News that CHP officers on Tuesday were actively patrolling, working with Caltrans and focusing attention on the routine problem areas like Highway 175 over Hopland, Highway 29 at the Glasgow Grade near Lower Lake and Cobb.

“Residents in Cobb know the drill so they usually manage pretty well,” Fansler said. “We are crossing our fingers that snow doesn’t drop to lake level in the next few days, that’s when things start to fall apart.”

The forecast is calling for more chances of snow on Wednesday during the daytime and nighttime hours, and continuing into Thursday morning.

On Thursday night, conditions are expected to begin to clear through Friday, with rain back in the forecast from Friday night through Tuesday.

Daytime temperatures through Saturday are forecast to be in the 40s. From Sunday through Tuesday, daytime temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-50s.

The forecast calls for nighttime temperatures mostly in the 30s, with a Thursday night dip into the mid-20s possible. Early next week, nighttime conditions are forecast to rise into the low 40s.
