LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Incoming storm conditions have led to forecasters issuing a new weather warning.

On Monday, the National Weather Service upgraded its winter weather advisory to a winter storm warning that’s in effect through 4 p.m. Wednesday.

During the winter storm warning, there is a forecast of heavy snow above the 2,500-foot elevation, with totals of between 4 and 8 inches. Above 3,500 feet, snowfall could be as deep as 14 inches.

There also is the potential for snow levels as low as 1,500 feet, the forecast said.

There was more rainfall on Monday, but less than the previous day — with the highest totals close to half an inch in the south county. During the late afternoon, there were cloud bursts along the Northshore in which more than 0.40 of an inch fell in less than five minutes.

On Tuesday, there is a forecast for more rain, with the potential for thunderstorms, during the day, with more rain and a chance of snow after 10 p.m.

During the day Wednesday, forecasters expect rain and snow before 10 a.m., with little or no snow accumulation expected.

More rain is expected from Thursday through the weekend, according to the forecast.

The Lake County Fire Protection District reported it has organized a prepositioned task force through the California Office of Emergency Services that will be in place through 5 p.m. Thursday “in anticipation of significant storm activity.”

Resources staged in case of emergency include four engines, a hand crew, a dozer from Mendocino County, a Type VI engine from South Lake County Fire and a task force leader from Northshore Fire Protection District, the district reported in a social media post.

On average, Lake County Fire said its Clearlake and Lower Lake stations respond to approximately 32 calls during a 48-hour shift.

“During major storm events, that number has surged to as many as 107 calls in the same timeframe,” the district said.
